概要

和田画廊では、7月3日より森洋史による個展「動植伽羅綵絵」を開催いたします。

森はこれまで、既存のイメージを引用し再構成する手法を軸に、ポップアートやアニメーションなどのサブカルチャーが消費されていく過程そのものを、絵画として捉え直してきました。親しみのあるモチーフにわずかなずれを差し込むことで、鑑賞者の中に共感と違和感の両義的な感覚を喚起します。

本展では、古来より甘美な香りによって珍重されてきた香木「伽羅」と、現代における「キャラクター（Character）」の概念を重ね合わせ、「伽羅」を人格性や物語性を宿した存在の象徴として捉えています。

タイトル「動植伽羅綵絵」は、伊藤若冲の《動植綵絵》へのオマージュとして構想されたものです。若冲が描き出した動植物の濃密な生命感や存在の気配を出発点とし、その絢爛な色彩と装飾性を現代的な視覚文化の文脈へと接続しています。

とりわけ本展では、アニメーションや物語作品に見られるキャラクター表現 ── 感情移入や象徴性を伴う人格化の構造に着目し、動植物たちを現代的な「存在」として再構成します。

作品に現れる動植物たちは、単なる擬人化ではなく、自然と空想、装飾と感情、古典と現代とを往還する「もうひとつの生命像」として表れます。

生命を「キャラクター」として捉え直すことで、本展は、感情や記憶、幻想を宿した「共鳴する存在」としての動植物表現の新たな可能性を提示します。

Overview

Wada Garou Tokyo is pleased to present Dōshoku Kyara Sai-e (Flora and Fauna Kyara Paintings), a solo exhibition by Hiroshi Mori, opening on July 3.

Mori's practice has long centered on the appropriation and reconstruction of existing imagery. Through this approach, he reexamines the very process by which subcultural forms such as Pop Art and animation are consumed, translating those mechanisms into painting. By introducing subtle displacements into familiar motifs, his works evoke within viewers a dual sensation of empathy and unease.

In this exhibition, Mori brings together the concept of kyara (character) in contemporary culture with kyara (伽羅), the most precious grade of fragrant agarwood, which has been treasured since ancient times for its exquisite aroma. Here, "Kyara" is reinterpreted as a symbol of beings endowed with personality, presence, and narrative potential.

The exhibition title, Dōshoku Kyara Sai-e, is conceived as an homage to Itō Jakuchū's celebrated masterpiece Dōshoku Sai-e (Colorful Realm of Living Beings). Taking as its point of departure the intense vitality and palpable presence of animals and plants depicted by Jakuchū, Mori reconnects their luxuriant colors and decorative qualities to the context of contemporary visual culture.

In particular, the exhibition focuses on character representation as found in animation and narrative works—the structures of personification through which audiences project emotions and symbolic meanings. Through this lens, animals and plants are reconstructed as contemporary forms of presence.

The flora and fauna that appear in these works are not merely anthropomorphized figures. Rather, they emerge as alternative forms of life that traverse the boundaries between nature and imagination, ornament and emotion, tradition and modernity.

By reimagining life itself as "character," this exhibition proposes new possibilities for the representation of animals and plants as resonant beings imbued with emotion, memory, and fantasy.
